Santa Rita

This photograph is of a natural rock formation and a well known landmark in southwestern New Mexico near Silver City at Santa Rita. It is a very special place for Hispanics and all the people who love the familiar vista. My relatives and many Hispanics have lived , worked or traveled to this former presidio (fort)and copper mine, since the Spanish established themselves here, centuries ago. Our Spanish ancestors named the beautiful sight for the beloved Spanish saint, Santa Rita de Cascia. One particular spectacularlate evening I was on my way home, when the special light of the approaching sundown caught my attention. I photographed our monijita (nun) , who local legend says was from a small convent (situated on land given the sisters by my relatives) whom was transformed to stone as she kneeled in repentance before God. She had after fallen to the temptation of love for one young soldier. In my photograph the kneeling nun once more faces the Great Light and the moving waves, and light bursts of his radiance. Below is my humble carving of our most holy saint- Santa Rita , who is the Patroness of Impossible Causes. Her feast day is May 22.
