This is San Francisco (St. Francis of Assisi). I carved him out of a giant tree stump, for State Representative G.X. McSherry and Mrs. G.X. McSherry (Jody) at their beautiful farm/ranch. Here I had just finished the bulto (statue) and Mrs. McSherry took my picture as I leaned, a little exhausted from my work. The following year I was asked to come back and carve my name on our San Francisco. The hollyhocks or varas de San Jose, as Mrs McSherry reminded me, when I could not remember how my father had once taught me, were thriving as in tribute or celebration of San Francisco. Below my beautiful granddaughter Taylor stands beside the varas de San Jose and San Francisco. |
